This Chapter examines the spatial organisation of trade, ranging from bigger and smaller towns in various parts of Vietnam, to the countryside, and finally, to China. Trust, and also distrust, is of crucial importance in the interactions at the Chinese markets. Containing a detailed ethnographic account of a business trip to cloth markets in Guangzhou, The Spatial Organisation Trade analyses long-distance business relations of Ninh Hiệp traders—not only with Chinese vendors, but even more importantly with hired shopping assistants, who serve as intermediary between Chinese and Vietnamese traders. By illuminating the role of these assistants, the chapter also clarifies the nature of trade relations between Vietnamese and Chinese trade relations. (111 words)
