Chapter 5 by Jennifer Gronau analyses the metaphorical delegitimation of the capitalist market economy in the quality press. Gronau argues that metaphors help discourse participants to deal with the complexity of the regime and entail specific ideas about its nature and potential for change after the 2008 financial crisis. Based on a combination of quantitative and interpretive methods, Gronau shows which metaphors are most prominent and which ideas about the necessity or possibility to reform or replace the capitalist market economy they entail. The analysis reveals that these metaphors pose high cognitive hurdles to thinking about and mobilizing support for a genuine institutional transformation of the regime. Instead, dominant metaphors tend to imply that only regulatory reform of the regime is required or possible.
