  • This chapter looks outwards and forwards, presenting PED as a framework or perspective for understanding the large and growing class of interactions with technology that involve personal media, identity, interpersonal relationships, social connections, ever-increasing (though far from universal) connectivity, and digital enhancements to the objects of everyday life. After claiming a lineage for PED in a range of existing work, it explains how PED frames concepts of performativity and performance in terms of experience as an emergent event whose parameters can be designed for, even if the event itself cannot be directly designed. It indicates how PED can bring performance studies and HCI into conversation with each other, as for example the four properties of autobiographical performance identified as part of the case study described in Chap. 10.1007/978-3-319-28395-1_5 illuminate concerns and possibilities from the perspectives of both fields. The chapter concludes by looking to potential future applications of PED, including the developing discussions around critical design, the political and ethical concerns of interaction, a surge of research into active spectatorship, a continued exploration of game and play, an exploration of the tensions between fiction and experience, and a reimagining of the concept of dramaturgy in the context of intermedial performance. PED is a new means of creating insights that I believe can drive a better informed and more consciously shaped relationship to our emerging, technologically expanded world.
