Beschreibungen/Notizen
Anxiety and mood disorders represent the two most common and best studied co-occurring psychopathologies in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) aged 5–21 years. The chapter begins with a brief overview of DSM-defined anxiety and mood disorders as they typically manifest in the general pediatric population. This is followed by a concise literature review on anxiety and mood disorders in children with ASD which focuses on prevalence, correlates the risk factors, and clinical presentation. Discussion focuses on how the presence of ASD and related developmental conditions requires one to adopt a developmental psychopathology framework to better understand how these disorders may manifest in this population. The chapter concludes with considerations for assessment, treatment, and future research.
