- The intensive care unit (ICU) experience is traumatic for patients and their families and can have lasting psychological effects. This chapter reviews PTSD in critical illness survivors and their families and provides current data and evidence on its prevalence, presentation, and risk factors. Challenges that are unique to the ICU patient population are discussed, and an overview of potential strategies to prevent and treat PTSD in the setting of ICU is provided.
