  • Renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) is the most common type of renal cancer and is associated with the poorest clinical outcome. Patients diagnosed at an advanced stage, or those experiencing relapse after nephrectomy, suffer from a high mortality rate. Research for novel serum biomarkers to predict the progression of renal cancer has focused on several serum proteins, gene mutations, and glycomic profiles, but little has been done on the genetic expression regarding the N-glycosylation pathway. This study aimed to investigate the association of MOGS, a gene encoding for the initial enzyme of the N-glycosylation pathway, with overall and disease-free survival in patients with KIRC. The clinical information and gene expression profiles of 533 patients were retrieved from cBioPortal. The correlation between MOGS expression and overall survival and disease-free survival rate was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier curve. Associations between the gene expression and other clinical features, including age, sex, and cancer stages, were evaluated using Chi-square (χ2) test. In all statistical analyses, a p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant. MOGS is a protein of the endoplasmic reticulum of various tissues, including the kidney, and is expressed higher in patients with KIRC. We found that high expression of MOGS in patients with renal clear cell carcinoma is associated with lower overall survival and disease-free survival rate (p = 1.72e-13; p = 1.75e-7, respectively).
