Both the GDR and the FRG claim(ed) Bertolt Brecht as part of their literary heritage. While he is one of the best-known German authors of the twentieth century, he presents challenges to textbook authors. His support of Marxism was paired with critique of the SED, and his decision to return to East Berlin after WWII was paired with a refusal to join the Party. Many post-unification textbooks go to great lengths to downplay the uncomfortable elements of Brecht’s life and writing to position him as standing on the right side of literary history, as is shown by an analysis of the Buckow Elegies.
