• This chapter introduces human development and the capability approach as theoretical and/or conceptual lenses. The chapter conceptualises and demonstrates the merits and applicability of using the human development values and the capability approach constructs in redefining the role of higher education. This allows us to envision the kind of university that builds its plans, designs, implementation, and outcomes while embedding and foregrounding human development and the capability approach perspectives. This chapter contributes to the search for more nuances and a robust understanding of the role of universities beyond the economic benefits to advance human development and the public good.
