The caudal approach to the epidural space in children, also known as “kiddie caudal,” is the safest and easiest regional technique in pediatric anesthesia. Caudal blocks are frequently provided as a single shot, as such they have a low complication rate with no adverse effect lasting longer than 3 months. Complications from caudal blocks include technical challenges from inability to access the epidural space, puncture of the epidural veins, and less commonly are dural puncture, arrhythmia, and local anesthetic toxicity.
