• Female-led stories of the last quarter century are aimed at teenagers and young adults. These stories illustrate girls’ and women’s empowerment and update the traditional heroine’s journey. Constructivism can illustrate how values and norms centered on gender and girls’ or women’s roles in society have proceeded at a rapid pace during the Second and Third Waves or feminism. Female characters in these stories are no longer restricted in the political acts that they can undertake, nor in the international relations in which they can participate. This chapter examines Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Xena: Warrior Princess television series, along with The Hunger Games and Divergent movie series.
