• This chapter examines the delivery of maternal healthcare services within the context of the American cultural value of action-orientation. Using selected social determinants of health that contribute to maternal health outcomes, it examines decisions by healthcare providers that both protect and potentially undermine maternal health. Key topics are strategies to control COVID-19 transmission and manage service interruptions, vaccine hesitancy and misinformation, providing care for mothers at especially high risk, and advocacy for safe birth environments.
