• Our results so far raise a question: what is the point of coming up with philosophical analyses when one has little reason to think that those efforts will ever be entirely satisfactory? The Charmides may provide an answer, for it raises the possibility that the virtue that is the topic of this dialogue, sôphrosunê (self-mastery), may actually turn out to be the limited wisdom that Socrates claims to have, namely, self-knowledge.
