In this chapter, we place current research about parental deployments and military children into historical context. Policies regarding military families have evolved from ignoring or excluding families to a more systematic and intentional configuration of formal supports. Our review of findings about parental deployments and military children in relation to each major conflict in the twentieth century revealed considerable diversity in children’s adjustment as well as resilience of military children. Research since 2000 has elaborated mediating and moderating factors tied to characteristics of both individuals and relationships. Despite the accumulated evidence, methodological limitations of existing research leave important questions unanswered. In an effort to address limitations in the body of evidence, we have initiated the Operation Military Experience (ME) Study to evaluate the long-term, direct and indirect pathways between early-life exposure to parental deployments and later adjustment in adolescence, as well as parental and family factors that influence these pathways. Increasingly, it is clear that entire family systems are implicated in deployment experiences. Military family research is providing guidance for prevention and intervention programs.
