Deformational cutting is a method that permits to obtain microfinning on the surface of the steel parts. The main difference between conventional cutting process and deformational cutting is that the chips are cut form one side while being straightened up as fins which remain as a functional part of the workpiece. A tool cuts and deforms the surface layers, forming a finned structure since the undercut layers are connected to the main body of the workpiece. The width of the slot gaps between the fins can be from tens to hundreds of micrometers with a depth of gaps up to 1 mm. The article describes a method for increasing the wear resistance of stainless AISI 321 chrome-nickel steel via the creation of microfinning produced by deformational cutting and embedding two different solid lubricants into the slot gaps between fins. The results of the metallographic study have shown that the material of the created fins experienced severe plastic deformation, which was accompanied by a partial transformation of metastable austenite into martensite and a twofold increase in the surface layer hardness. The results of wear tests in the conditions of unlubricated sliding friction have shown that the application of microrelief with embedding solid lubricants substantially increased the surface wear resistance of stainless austenitic steel.
