Beschreibungen/Notizen
The near coincidence of Shakespeare's 450th birthday and the quatercentenary of his death encouraged the Société Française Shakespeare (SFS) to concentrate on the date 2014 and avoid the global traffic jam that was bound to happen two years later, when the whole world would celebrate the Bard. Stratford and London were already competing for the honour of hosting the 2016 World Congress before they agreed on a shared commemoration, with a fleet of coaches to convey the participants from one venue to the other. Apart from practical considerations, the organisers thought it more congenial to celebrate Shakespeare’s birth than mourn his death. So France chose to jump the queue, and avoided linguistic difficulties with a title that made sense in any language: Shakespeare 450. This chapter outlines the organisation and events of Shakespeare 450, placing them in the context of the long history of Shakespearean reception and performance in France.
