Despite the pioneering role of Ada Lovelace in the nineteenth century and countless other women who programmed the first electronic computers in the mid-twentieth century, computer programming has not historically been seen as a woman’s profession. After highlighting cross-cultural differences in the participation of women in computing today, this chapter examines the achievements of women in Victorian Britain, including Lovelace, before turning to the experiences of information and communication technology operators and users in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, as well as women’s contributions to electronic computing and programming in the mid- to late-twentieth century. Addressing the participation of women in information and communication technologies, from mechanical calculators to telephone, radio and electronic computing, this chapter highlights the cultural and social factors—not just individual choice or personal aptitude—that shaped the gendering of the field.
