  • In this chapter, we analyse the data similar to those we considered in the preceding chapter, that is—the data on the administrative units (municipalities) in Poland. However, the analysis concerns country-wide data, and not just single province or provinces, and is focussed on the initial partition of the set of municipalities, elaborated by the experts for planning purposes. This partition is a typology of municipalities, based on their functionalities. The reverse clustering experiments for the data on municipalities and the assumed functional typology show that it is possible, at most, to recover the qualitative features of the assumed typology, with very serious quantitative divergences from it. This is due to two main reasons: first, the highly specific nature of the procedure, leading to this typology, including distinction of types on the basis of very particular characteristics, as well as constraints on the number of types, and, on the other hand, the fact that quite homogeneous and quasi-continuous population of administrative units  had to be divided up into separate types, which led to a high degree of arbitraryness. Anyway, the qualitative similarity of the obtained partitions to the typology assumed allows for the formulation of some interesting and important conclusions and research issues.
