• This chapter and the next one are devoted to the experiments related to the data concerning the administrative units in Poland and their categorisations. Thus, in this chapter the municipalities are considered, forming a province (several hundred units), first with their formal administrative categorisation into three types (urban, rural, and urban-rural). Reverse clustering is used here to attempt the reconstruction of this tripartite division on the basis of the socio-economic and physical characteristics of municipalities. The results obtained are very close to the administrative classification, and, moreover, the parameters of the clustering procedure, obtaned through reverse clustering for one province, turned out to lead to a successful classification of municpalities in another one. Then, for the same set of municpalities, the initial typology is considered, formed on the basis of functional types by the experts. These functional types (nine of them) are no longer as well rendered by the reverse clustering, but their qualitative character is quite adequately represented in the partitions obtained. The problem in this case resides in the fact that the relatively homogeneous and continuous subset of rural municipalities is divided up into a number of types, introducing a degree of arbitraryness.
