• The visa application requires planning and can be time exhaustive. The most common visa types for visa-requiring international medical graduate (IMG) residents and fellows are the J1 and the H1B. B1/B2 is very commonly used for medical student electives. Visa application outcomes range from approvals to denials or even administrative processing. The IMG may even face logistic issues at the border such as having to go through secondary screening. Some visa types also have certain time limitations, annual maintenance, and travel validation to leave the United States. Being well informed about the visa process and choosing the right visa type is crucial for the successful IMG.
