The unions of parts of the Eastern Churches with the Church of Rome since the sixteenth century were shaped on the Roman side by a centralist ecclesiology consolidated around the Pope and established against the Reformation. The result was a new transformation of different traditions within one Church into separated denominations: “Latins” and “Greeks” became “Catholics” and “Orthodox.” Instead of the “unio” new alienations and divisions arose. This chapter addresses four questions: the Council of Ferrara-Florence (1438/1439) as a point of reference for union efforts; the reception of the Council of Florence in the face of historical ruptures; the church unions since the sixteenth century—an insufficient hermeneutics; and ecumenical perspectives.
