• The primary function of the kidneys is to excrete end products of metabolism, to regulate electrolytes and mineral concentrations, and to maintain fluid and electrolyte balance. Other functions include urine production, dilution, and concentration; maintenance of blood pressure; concentration of extracellular and intracellular fluids; gluconeogenesis; maintenance of calcium phosphorus balance; and activation of vitamin and hormone synthesis.
