• From its inception, empire characterized the Atlantic world. Spain, Portugal, France, and England competed to carve out ever-changing territorial sphere for economic exploitation, settlement, and the production of lucrative crops. Even so, the French Revolution temporarily put an end to empire building and dismantled much of the French and Spanish empires in the Atlantic world, the second half of nineteenth-century witnessed a renewed interest in imperial projects, both in the Americas and Africa.
