• I have to confess, I was unprepared for the intense public interest generated by the boat. To some, the immediate connection between an ancient boat found in the Sea of Galilee and Jesus is self-evident. My only prior contact with the Gospels had been while taking an undergraduate course in Jewish history at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The possibility that the boat might date to the general historical period covered in the Gospels, as well as the “boat of Jesus” appellation given it by the media, quickly prompted me to learn more.
