• To label a topic as the “calculus of physics” is not intended to imply the establishment of some new type of mathematics, but rather that a point of view different from that comfortable to the professional mathematician is to be employed in its discussion. Concepts are introduced for the immediacy of their application to the description of physical phenomena, and a heuristic approach is used to introduce them. We shall not hesitate to ignore interesting but uncommon exceptions to our statements and shall make use of pictorial representations and special cases to illustrate our points.
