  • The understanding of the factors associated with the caring for a person with dementia and the related caregiver burden is a key area of study, as the research clearly demonstrates that dementia affects the caregiving relatives as well as their families. Specifically, grief, loss, and depression are common emotions experienced by dementia caregivers. Latino families face greater levels of dementia caregiver burden associated with the cultural values that they subscribe to which may serve as protective factors against dementia caregiver burden or, conversely, place them at a higher risk of dementia caregiver burden. This chapter focuses on grief, loss, and depression in the caregiver(s) and families of Latinos with dementia. Specifically, we discuss Latino cultural experiences and values and illustrate how these may contribute to or ameliorate the caregiver burden. As a backdrop for this analysis, this chapter utilizes General Systems Theory as it relates to Latino families and dementia and outlines treatment options and concerns, including best practices, informal support services, and utilization barriers faced by Latino caregivers.
