• A simple temperature control system for ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) surface science applications has been developed. It is based on commercially available components and can be constructed with minimal electronics expertise. It controls the temperature of a single crystal sample in UHV over the range 80–1633 K using a type K thermocouple to monitor the temperature of the sample. The controller can be used to provide temperature ramps over the range 0–10 K/s.
