• A novel near infrared (NIR) phosphorescent osmium complex ( Os1 ) was developed for lysosome tracking and photodynamic therapy. Owing to its NIR photophysical properties, cellular imaging ability and phototoxicity, it has advantages over its ruthenium analogue ( Ru1 ). In comparison to a ruthenium( ii ) complex, an osmium( ii ) complex has great advantages of NIR phosphorescence imaging and NIR photodynamic therapy.
