• This paper advocates the funding of social science research into the individual and societal effects of rapid technological change, particularly those changes posed by the new information technologies. In support of this argument and its relevance for Australia, some evidence of the current pace of technological development is given, along with an outline of existing gaps in our knowledge of technology's effects. Finally, some speculation is made on the possible futures we face, thereby hopefully underscoring the need for adequate research.
