- Highlights • Juvenile male rats have higher extracellular glutamate concentrations in the lateral septum than juvenile female rats. • Both sexes show increased GABA and glutamate release in the lateral septum (LS) during social play behavior. • Blockade of GABA-A receptors in the LS decreased social play behavior in both sexes. • Blockade of ionotropic glutamate receptors in the LS decreased social play behaviors in females, but not in males. • GABA in the LS facilitates social play in both sexes, while glutamate may facilitate social play in females only.
