• It was investigated whether the decrease of platelet count, which occurs during open heart surgery with the use of the heart-lung machine (HLM), is a result of platelet adhesion and/or aggregation. PGE1 in concentrations of 100, 10 and 5 ng/ml, respectively, inhibited platelet decrease in human heparinized blood circulating in the HLM in vitro. It is concluded that under the conditions used the adhesion/aggregation process is involved and that platelet aggregates are circulating. The relation to platelet function, organ impairment by micro-embolization and the function of filters in the HLM in cardiopulmonary bypass are discussed.
