  • Association between palliative care and healthcare outcomes among adults with terminal non-cancer illness: population-based matched cohort study (2020) Quinn et al, BMJ 370: m2257 Implications for practice and research Palliative care may help reduce the rate of emergency department visits, hospital admissions and intensive care unit admissions in people dying from organ failure. For those patients dying of organ failure, palliative care was associated with one fewer emergency department visit for every 11 patients, and one less hospital admission for every 4 patients. In Ontario, palliative care is provided by a range of members of the multidisciplinary team in multiple settings.3 Future research should focus on the timing and structure of palliative care services to identify interventions that can support patients to access healthcare when appropriate and to avoid it when it is not.
