  • In addition to the impressive size of the cohort as well as protracted follow-up, the article delves into an area not routinely acknowledged in prior series, that is, the use of adjunctive spinoplasty.2 In this series, 688 patients underwent PID placement for high-grade spinal stenosis recalcitrant to conservative management and 432 of these patients had PMMA placed in adjacent spinous processes, aka, spinoplasty. Randomized controlled trials comparing Superion to X-STOP found no differences in efficacy at 2-year follow-up.7 The data from the Superion trial was also compared with that of 19 previously published minimally invasive decompression studies and found to have equivalent outcomes up to 2 years with respect to back and leg pain.8 The available 5-year follow-up data regarding the use of Superion as stand-alone therapy for spinal decompression demonstrated that 84% of patients continued to have improved claudication scores and 80% had improved back pain compared with baseline9 making a strong argument as to its durability. The results from studies on percutaneous placement of interspinous process devices are encouraging.1 8 13 Manfre et al provide a window for how that data might be improved in the long term, particularly for patients with osteoporosis, and sets the stage for elevating the percutaneous approach beyond the minimally invasive alternatives of the past.1 Twitter @junjian_huang Funding The authors have not declared a specific grant for this research from any funding agency in the public, commercial, or not-for-profit sectors.
