Pregnant women participating in the PRIDE Study were asked to fill out a postal food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) after completing the web-based baseline questionnaire.2 We employed three strategies to increase response rates in succession: (1) underestimation of completion time (10–15 min) without offering incentives, (2) underestimation of completion time with an unconditional €5 gift certificate for an online store and (3) correctly estimated completion time (20–30 min) with the gift certificate. Furthermore, the proportions of FFQs with low levels of item non-response were comparable, although it seemed to be slightly higher in the strategy with the correctly estimated completion time (69%) compared with the strategies with an underestimated completion time (63%).Table 1 Effects of variations in estimated completion time and unconditional gift certificates on questionnaire completion rates and item non-response among pregnant women participating in the PRIDE Study Completed questionnaire Completed questionnaire without reminder Item non-response <5% Strategy N N (%) RR (95% CI) N (%) RR (95% CI) N (%) RR (95% CI) Underestimated completion time, no gift certificate 77 71 (92) 1.05 (0.98 to 1.12) 57 (74) 0.99 (0.86 to 1.14) 45 (63) 0.92 (0.76 to 1.10) Underestimated completion time, €5 gift certificate 61 56 (92) 1.04 (0.96 to 1.13) 49 (80) 1.07 (0.94 to 1.22) 35 (63) 0.90 (0.73 to 1.11) Correctly estimated completion time, €5 gift certificate* 684 602 (88) 1.00 511 (75) 1.00 416 (69) 1.00 *Reference category.
