  • To identify the demographic characteristics of anemia and its prevalent trend in pregnant women. The data of hemoglobin of 276 895 pregnant women participating in a perinatal health care surveillance system and their babies were born on Jan 1st, 2001 to Dec 31st, 2005 from 14 cities or counties in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces in China were analyzed. The overall prevalence of anemia was 31.7% (95% CI 31.4% - 31.9%). The prevalence of anemia in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimesters during pregnancy was 15.0% (95% CI 14.9% - 15.2%), 24. 6% (95% CI 24.4% - 24.9%) and 50.8% (95% CI 50.5% -51.1%), respectively. Most of them were mild anemic. The overall prevalence of anemia during pregnancy decreased 26.6%, 39.4%, 32.6% and 23.4% in the years of 2002 to 2005. The prevalence of anemia was higher in pregnant women who were farmers and with less education, higher gravidity or parity. The prevalence of anemia during pregnancy remains a public health problem in China.
