  • Growing up on a farm protects children from asthma. In this study, the investigators show that the diversity of microbial exposure of farm children as compared with children in the reference group can explain the observed protective effect. Environmental exposure to microorganisms has repeatedly been found to be inversely related to the manifestation of atopic diseases such as asthma and hay fever. This observation has been made in various contexts, including the studies conducted in the Republic of Karelia (Russia) and North Karelia (Finland), in which two populations in geographically adjacent areas live under different environmental conditions.
