• Since its introduction to health care, ultrasound has developed into a widely accepted, readily available, accurate diagnostic tool. Its advantages are many, being safe and portable, allowing real-time viewing, and being relatively inexpensive. 22 Since the creation of duplex sonography, the role of ultrasound has expanded into the broad realm of vascular diagnosis and intervention. With the advent of color Doppler and other sophisticated technology, including guidance methods and catheters, ultrasound's value in intervention also is being realized. 86 Recent applications as a guidance tool include performance of aspirations, biopsies, drainages, and stent placements in virtually every organ, space, and vessel that can be visualized by ultrasound. This article specifically addresses the use of ultrasound at the bedside of critically ill patients in the ICU.
