The term "agency adjudication" may conjure images of a formal "on the record" hearing governed by the procedural provisions of the Administrative Procedure Act (APA) and presided over by an administrative law judge (ALJ). Type A adjudications include hearings conducted by ALJs in the Social Security Administration, the National Labor Relations Board, and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
