The US and China have made “progress” in stabilising plunging bilateral relations, Xi Jinping declared on Monday as the Chinese president held a long-delayed meeting with US secretary of state Antony Blinken. The Biden administration is keen to re-establish diplomacy and open channels of communication with Beijing to reduce the risk of what it calls “misperception and miscalculation” in the relationship. Analysts said the attempts to restart dialogue could help lay the ground for a face-to-face meeting between Xi and President Joe Biden during a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in the US in November.
