• After eating the arroz caldo, I decided to stop by to visit with my friend and buy a few items, if necessary. When I entered with a "Magandang hapon, po" she looked up and stared at me for a while. "'Kaw ba 'yan, (Is that you?) Mr. Cervantes?" she inquired. "Ako nga. (It's me, all right.)" I replied. "Sabi ko na ba, e! Boses mo nga! (That's what I thought. It's your voice all right.)" she said. Nevertheless, she continued to peer at me as I walked towards her. She was still staring at me when I got to her. Then, she whispered, "Hoy, Mr. Cervantes, hwag ka magalit, ha. Bakit ang tanda- tanda mo na, ha? Biglang bigla. Tumaas ba talaga ang blood sugar mo, ha? (Hey, Mr. Cervantes, don't get angry at me, please. Why have you aged so quickly? Has your blood sugar count gone so high?)" she asked candidly but with concern. I approached her and confided, "Manang, may makeup ho ako (Auntie, I have makeup on.)" "Bakit ka naman naka makeup? (Why the heck are you wearing makeup?)" she reprimanded me. I meant I had stage makeup, of course. She thought I was wearing fashion makeup ala some crazy transvestite. I asked the woman in charge, "Saan na si lola? (Where is granny?)" "Sa bahay po. Nagpapahinga. Malabo na po kasi ang mata, e. (At home. She is resting. Her eyes have become weak, you see.)" "Pakisabi na kinukumusta ko ho siya (Please extend my best wishes.)," I said.
