• Over the past decade, the US Army has been sending an increasing number of career officers to graduate school to study industrial engineering. As a subdiscipline within industrial engineering, the US Army has used Operations Research (OR) extensively over the past 25 years. One major application of OR is weapon system development and procurement. In addition, a major career field, Operations Research/Systems Analysis (OR/SA) has recently opened up for Army officers in OR. OR/SA allows Army officers to alternate assignments between their individual branches and OR. The popularity of the OR career field emphasizes a trend that has recently come into focus. OR has unmistakenly risen in importance in the minds of the major decision makers of the Army. With the importance of effective management for highly complex systems, an officer with an industrial engineering/OR background is ideally suited to be an officer in today's Army.
