The Tony Awards was established as a memorial to Antoinette Perry, an actress, producer and director and an ardent supporter of the American Theatre Wing. The first Tony Awards was held on Apr. 6, 1947, a year after Perry's death. The award recognizes the outstanding performance of actors and actresses in a musical production. However, it was only in 1949 when the award-giving body started giving an award for the best musical. A chronological order of the list of musicals which have won the Tony Award is included.
