Egg set out to create a financial services organization that would enable customers to manage their money easily and efficiently. To succeed in a customer-driven proposition, the company knew that it had to explore and exploit the opportunities offered by the digital economy. In the run-up to its launch, Egg conducted an extensive research and consultation program of more than 30,000 consumers. This told the company that people were becoming increasingly aware of the need to take care of themselves financially - they felt let down by the welfare system, public sector health and education systems and felt a loss of control in shaping their financial future. Their financial needs were simply, but sincerely expressed: "I want a comfortable old age."
