• The $11-billion-a-year paints and coatings industry is a key market for the chemical industry. The market has always been big, but the growth rate is the key factor for suppliers. According to Thomas Wagner of The Glidden Co., this year the industry as a whole will grow by 2%, compared with the 1.5% historic growth rate. Industry changes are the result of outside environmental concerns, economic conditions, and a move to new construction materials; coatings formulations are being affected by environmental and health concerns; and the affect of these changes may cause some attrition among companies. The situation has stirred new enthusiasm for emerging coating technology. Waterborne, powder, radiation-cured, and high-solids coatings are being developed and placed on the market faster than ever. The real growth in demand is coming from the specialty coatings and product original equipment manufacturer area. For the whole industry, a significant profit indicator is the change in the Paint Raw Materials Price Index in relation to the Prepared Paint Price Index.
