  • In 1988, Dow Chemical's product sales mix was divided 52% for basics and 48% for specialties. The mix is expected to shift a little further, to a 45%-55% ratio, by 1995. The company's 3rd-quarter sales were $4.15 billion, up 24% from the previous-year period, and operating income rose to $1.07 billion, a 93% increase. According to analysts and Dow officers, attention to geographic balance will be the key to Dow's future success. In 1987, sales outside the US exceeded 55% of the total. It is predicted that those economies will grow collectively at an estimated rate of 3.0% to 3.5% per year from 1987 to 1995. Nowhere is the globalization effort more evident than in pharmaceuticals. Dow is concentrating its commercial development on the 8 most important countries in the world: the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the US, Canada, Japan, and Australia. Dow has integrated all its centers around the world and is working with a number of Japanese original equipment manufacturers in the automotive industry.
