- Nuclear utilities have been working for 20 yr to address the issue of spent nuclear fuel storage at their nuclear power plant sites for longer periods of time. Despite redesigns to increase rack capacity, many plants are faced with the prospect that their spent fuel pools will not be able to accommodate all spent fuel that will be discharged from reactors until DOE can begin accepting spent fuel shipments at the Yucca Mountain, NV, repository in 2010. Most nuclear power plant sites are expected to construct an independent spent fuel storage installation, a group of dry storage casks to safely store their spent fuel. Design and safety issues for these installations are surveyed.
