• The Association for Computing Machinery held its 50th anniversary conference in 1997 and devoted the meeting to the topic of 'The Next 50 Years of Computing.' Scientists, as well as leaders from business, education, government and the arts, all attempted to predict the future. Everyone agreed that processing power, storage and communication bandwidth will increase enormously, but beyond such relatively obvious extrapolations, contradictory scenarios emerged. For example, computers will either bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, or they will widen it. Computers will either expand human abilities or replace them. Computers will either initiate a time of unprecedented societal creativity, or they will overwhelm good content with bad and encourage and perpetuate endless mediocrity.
