  • Research data indicates that subordinates describe successful managers as people who are capable of motivating the work force; they instill feelings of responsibility, a sense of organization, and team spirit in their workers. The achievement motive-the need to succeed-is critical. In small organizations, it may be the key to survival. In large ones, it must be tempered for effective management. Otherwise, managers may create negative feelings in their subordinates who may perceive undue fraternization with the staff as favoritism. Managers who are good tend to be joiners and usually belong to many organizations. They seem to enjoy their work thoroughly, and they are not above sacrifice when the welfare of the firm is at stake. They have a sense of justice and believe someone who sacrifices and works hard will eventually be rewarded.
