  • Baillie Gifford has endured a strange centenary year in 2008, played out against market conditions reminiscent of the Great Depression. The group says its structure - it is a partnership, unusually for a fund management firm - is sturdy enough to withstand current rigours, just as it has for the past century. It started life in 1908 to manage the Scottish Mortgage investment trust and still maintains this contract today. Ken Edwards, its sales and marketing director, says this is testament to the group's track record: few groups can boast a client of 100 years' tenure. Of about pound 40 billion under Baillie Gifford's management, pound 5.5 billion is retail money across investment trusts and Oeics. The remainder is in the institutional market, which the group branched into in the 1970s. Baillie Gifford remains best known for its investment trust business, but Edwards insists it is just as focused on the open-ended side and teams work across disciplines. For example, James Budden, who recently joined from Witan as marketing director for the wealth management division, will use his direct marketing experience across the group.
