The data presented in this article demonstrate that polybutenes are useful modifiers for ABS resins. Polybutenes can be incorporated into ABS at relatively high levels without incompatibility. As a result of the incorporation of polybutene, significant improvements in impact strength were achieved, and the melt flow rate of the ABS was maintained or increased. At the same time, only moderate decreases in tensile and flexural properties were observed. The results are consistent with polybutene's modifying the dispersed rubber phase, leading to an apparent increase in volume of the rubber phase. Significant opportunities exist for optimizing ABS properties by proper election of polybutene grade, concentration, and ABS type.
