During their week in Denver, which culminated in the official nomination of Barack Obama for president, the Democratic Party reasserted itself as the go-to party for health reform even though the rhetoric so far hasn't been matched by specific policies, timelines and, in some cases, even a consensus. Many health policy veterans, while publicly calling for reform, privately say that the longer it takes, the more likely the agenda will stall or get watered down. The reason they give is that any delay would allow opponents of an Obama plan to mobilize against it. Over the din of such discussions -- and perhaps because of them -- the overarching theme to emerge from Denver was that health reform is the domain of the Democratic Party.
